We caught up with Maryam Goharinejad, Talent Acquisition Specialist at donorworx, to hear her thoughts on building a talented team of Charity Ambassadors at donorworx. Take a look at the advice and tips she gives – they’ll help you to perfect your application and job interview!

What do you like most about your job?

Can I say everything?  I thoroughly enjoy speaking with new people on a daily basis and learning about their life experiences and what got them excited about applying for a donorworx Fundraiser position.  At donorworx, we truly have a family culture. Everybody is extremely supportive, collaborative and passionate about their work and doing the best we can to support our incredible charity partners.  We’re on this journey together! Finally, I appreciate that donorworx gives me the freedom to be creative in sourcing top talent for our opportunities. We believe in ethical Fundraising and I feel most rewarded when I hear that our Fundraisers are doing great work in the field!

Any job tips for candidates seeking a job in fundraising?

To become a successful Fundraiser, you first have to understand what the position entails.  I encourage all job seekers, if possible, to visit one of our charity branded booths, speak with our Fundraisers and ask questions about what it’s like to be a donorworx Fundraiser.  Keep in mind, this is not just any job.  Our Fundraisers will say they feel fulfilled everyday knowing the number of lives they’ve changed by simply starting a conversation with a shopper in the mall or a traveller at the airport.  Finally, do your research! What qualities do you look for in a fundraiser?

bubblesOur Fundraisers come from diverse backgrounds and experiences.  What stands out the most to us as recruiters is an individual who truly enjoys engaging with others and having meaningful conversations.  We appreciate when candidates shares stories and experiences about instances in which they were self-motivated, driven to succeed and how they persevered beyond obstacles to achieve their goals.  We look for those candidates who have a “can do” attitude and who truly show an interest in this work!

What attracts candidates to the culture at donorworx?

I truly believe what attracts candidates to the donorworx culture is our passion behind the work we do.  Our CEO, Sarah Shaw’s story and her vision for creating a Face to Face Fundraising organization which truly supports our charity partners speaks volumes. Our fun and inspirational core values and our dedication to having fun while we do it!

Can you give us a sneak peek into the interview process at donorworx?

It begins with a review of the applications we’ve received.  Once we’ve short listed a number of candidates, we proceed with a phone interview in which we share details about the position and ask questions to learn more about a candidate’s background and experience.  Our final stage is an interactive in person interview session where candidates are encouraged to participate and showcase their skills and passion for this role.
